About the Band

The Nick Dewhurst Band plays a type of jazz/funk/fusion & pop that is exciting and original, whilst remaining accessible and enjoyable to a wide range of audiences! Jazz critics will enjoy the original compositions and creativity within the band, and fans of simply great live music will enjoy the mix of well known tunes, balanced with original music that’s also highly accessible, but ticks all the boxes of modern contemporary jazz, just in it’s own way.

You want interaction? Original music? Young exciting upcoming musicians? Great grooves? Passionate solos? Fine arrangements and writing? 3 horn voicings? Melt the house down guitar solos? Well, you’ll find it all in this band.

Led by multi-instrumentalist, award winning, 1st Class Honours degree graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz Course, NYJO & MYJO graduate, teacher, and 21st century portfolio musician,  Nick Dewhurst (who plays Trumpet, Flugelhorn and Guitar), the band is also made up of fellow Birmingham Conservatoire graduate, Sam Craig on Tenor Saxophone.  Sam has a sound that is influenced by many of the sax greats, but in particular those from the Jazz Fusion era including tenor giants Bob Minzter and Michael Brecker.  When he’s not practising or gigging, you might just be overtaken by Sam during one of his many triathlon training sessions…

Occasionally joining the front line of Nick and Sam is graduate of Chetham’s School of Music, saxophonist Beth Fisher.  Now a mechanic in the week, Beth will sort your MOT out during the day, and then play a great Soprano Sax solo for you in the evening.

Backing up Nick, Sam & Beth is a fantastic rhythm section featuring Tom Lindsay on Piano, Tom Moore on Bass Guitar, and Carl Hemmingsley on Drums.  Pianist Tom Lindsay has a busy schedule as a musician & teacher, playing up and down the country regularly with all sorts of bands, and also recently released his own debut album ‘Now’s the Time’.  Bassist Tom Moore is a man in demand too, who now plays regularly with guitarist Remi Harris, but with all sorts of other bands too.  The band’s drummer, Carl Hemmingsley, is a specialist when it comes to Jazz Funk, Fusion and Pop, and has an incredible sense of groove, time, feel and sound.

Since forming in 2015, the band has played lots of gigs across the Midlands, including several performances at the Lichfield Blues & Jazz Festival, as well as at jazz clubs including Birmingham Jazz, THSH Jazzlines, Kenilworth Jazz, Tamworth Jazz and Lichfield Jazz.  The band has also started performing regularly at Matt & Phreds Jazz Club in Manchester where it continues to develop its new ‘pop-jazz’ set.

The band has also teamed up with major national jazz names, and put on three big sell-out ‘special guest’ concerts which featured the likes of Mike Walker on Guitar, Dennis Rollins on Trombone, and Derek Nash on Saxes.  Highlights of the concert with Dennis Rollins are available on YouTube.

In additional to all the concerts and gigs the band has performed over the past 5 years, the band has also recorded two albums.  In 2016 ‘Suspect in You’ was released and received praise from London Jazz News’ Peter Bacon, as well as John Hellings on BBC local radio, and in 2020 the band’s latest album ‘Skyrocket’ (which features Dennis Rollins as special guest) was launched in June during the Coronavirus Lockdown.

To conclude, the Nick Dewhurst band is a great contemporary small jazz band that specialises in jazz, funk, fusion and pop, and puts on a great show of melodic, masterful and foot-tapping live music!
